Running Club

February update

Acorns have been seen out early this year, with many members running and helping out at the York Parkrun which has seen a massive growth since Christmas.

The fine weather has meant that the Sunday runs out over the Yorkshire Wolds have been possible and very enjoyable. For those of us who follow the longer races, Richard Gover successfully completed the grueling Spine Challenger (about 108 miles of the Pennine Way) in under 40 hours. The unseasonable warm weather meant that the bogs of black hill, bleaklow, kinder scout were not frozen over and therefore energy sapping.  The overnights were very, very black and cold. Overall he said that it was the hardest thing he had ever done.

Meanwhile winter training has been conducted on Tuesdays and Thursdays meeting at 7pm for 7.15 run off.
Tuesdays have seen us doing steady runs of 5 -7 miles with some groups targeting local strava segments to relieve the monotony of street running.
Thursdays have changed so that some members go for a steady run whilst others are sprint/ rep training ready for 10km York Road Race League which starts on 25 April in Pocklington.

The AGM is on 21 February so there will be none or only a short training run after the AGM.

Christmas 2016

December has been a busy month. It started with Nicky Spinks giving a very entertaining talk about fell running, farming and dealing with cancer. Over 100 people attended the evening which has inspired several runners to have a closer look at the Bob Graham Round.

We attempted the Tuesday night social club quiz – we were only just beaten by one of the regular teams – we will have another go in January.

This week saw Acorns running round the snickleways of York in festive attire – it is always great to savour the Christmas atmosphere in the city centre. Here is the team before we set off:

If you want the route then please search Strava for “York snickleways”. Thank you to Gill for organising a fine festive snack to revive ourselves after the tour of the town.

Parkrun – many members to enjoy the weekly challenge of running the York Parkrun. Over christmas/ new year I anticipate abit of “parkrun tourism” whilst Acorns visit the friends and families around the UK/ world and drop in on the local event. For the more ambitious there are several opportunities for the “double” as some event start at 10am or 10.30am on New years day.

Merry Christmas

It was good to see everyone out this week enjoying the ambiance and festivities of York on our traditional Christmas run round the snickleways of York. Thanks to Phil for leading us a merry dance round the back streets, main streets and restaurants!

The January Pie and Peas evening was a great success with many members old and new appearing down at Acorn.  After a lap of the Knavesmire in the snow, we retired to enjoy the famous Richardsons pies followed by a surprise birthday cake for Ian.

Recently several members have attempted the Acorn Social Club quiz night which happens in the bar after running on Tuesdays. We are getting better, but could do with some help to beat the residents!

Looking forward, there is the AGM  on Tuesday 26th  February at 7.15pm. There will be a run afterwards for the keen ones.

Last week we headed over to the University for a steady run as it was so cold. It became a little longer than anticipated as we on the way back we turned right at the Mount to visit Acomb high street. This week, with warmer weather we should be hopefully down near the river for a “whistle” type run. There will be a steady group leaving the club at the normal time.

Christmas Social

December 16, 2011
7:00 pmto10:00 pm

Last years Christmas ‘Do’ was so successful we thought we’d do the same thing again ! This time though it’s at the Judges Lodging and it’s on Friday 16th December. The cost is £10 for which we get buffet food. See Chairman John for tickets.

Miuke Taskers 70th birthday social on 10th November was a huge success, with well over 50 attending. We had a pie and pea supper after training (70reps of The Horseshoe, plus a few more for good measure)
