We had a smaller turnout than usual for the Parkrun on Saturday 7th April, no doubt due to having the Helmsley 10k trail race the following day, which was a club target race. Well done to the 3 who ran.

Helmsley 10k trail race 8th April
The Helmsley 10k trail race once again proved popular with York Acorn/City of York runners with 18 of us taking part in this scenic trail race. The course is not easy with a long uphill drag on road to the 3k mark to the small village of Carlton followed by a long off road descent through woodland trails. There is also a cruel climb back to the finish in Helmsley.
Tom Bean obviously didn’t find it too hard as he won in a time of 33.48 on a course which is actually slightly longer than 10k. North York Moors’ Paul Lowe was the only runner to go with Tom’s early pace but had to let go around the half way mark leaving Tom to win by nearly a minute. Mike Raynes was next home for the club in 9th place (37.59) to continue his improved recent form. Young Rory McMillan looks like he might have inherited his father’s quick finishing speed to place 2nd junior in a time of 39.10.
Not to be outdone the club’s ladies also performed well. Emma Willets made it a club double for the third year running in this event by being first lady in a time of 40.42, finishing about 400m clear of 2nd placed Caroline Lambert of Wetherby. Heather Tuffs was 3rd home in 43.55 narrowly prevailing ahead of Charlotte Mason (43.59) in an uphill sprint finish. Rather them than me! Liz Gilley also finished just inside the top ten with 47.09.
The club also three other athletes winning age group prizes. Young Jade Hutichison was the first under 17 lady (49.10) whilst at the other end of the age spectrum Mike Hetherton (44.13) and Mike Tasker (50.56) were first over 65s and over 70s respectively. Which proves that the race caters for all ages if nothing else.
Other club stalwarts to complete the course were Howard Winzar, 3rd over 60 in 48.02, Laura Eden, 3rd junior in 50.23, Gerry Orchard (51.22), John Tattersall (51.28), Dave Paver (53.08), Julie Bushell (55.31), Janet Gibson (56.01) and Sue Hatfield 2nd Lady over 40 in 56.19.
Several juniors also ran in the fun runs that the organisers thoughtfully put on but it seems that no records have been kept of these runs.
