York Acorn is a friendly, sociable, easy-going running club that was originally formed in 1982. With a mixture of ages, experience, abilities and interests (including road, trail, fell, cross-country and track) most runners will find something to suit them at our club. We participate in events at a local, national and international level and our members travel from all over the York region to run together. Our members vary widely and include super fast race-winners, those setting out to achieve their own personal challenges and those who are happy with a steady run among friends. We consider the social side of our club very important and many runners stay on for a chat and a drink after training. In addition to this we also meet for various other activities, such as walking/orienteering events and gladly welcome newcomers interested in any of these pursuits. Whatever your interests and ability you'll find encouragement and support among our members.
York Acorn has a partner club in the City of York Athletic Club who are based at the track at Huntington Stadium. If you join one of the clubs you automatically gain membership of the other as well. While York Acorn affiliates for road and fell, City of York affiliates for track & field and cross country. Note that these affiliations only apply for team competition. In other words, Acorn members can run in an Acorn vest in cross country track & field events, but cannot compete for an Acorn team. However, we would prefer Acorn members competing in cross country and track& field to run in a City of York vest and vice versa. This will mean that you will need to purchase a City of York vest if you wish to compete in cross country and track & field events. Sorry if that is a bit complicated, but it seems to work pretty well and enables us to get very strong teams out in events such as the National Cross Country Championships and the Northern and National Road Relays. Use the link at the bottom of the page to access the City of York website.
Note that York Acorn only caters for senior athletes ie. minimum age of 18. Anyone younger than that should go to City of York who take children from the age of 8.
